Term 2 Issue 1

Kia ora e te whānau o Whangaparāoa

Welcome back to Term 2. I hope the recent break provided an opportunity for rest, time with whānau, and a chance to reset for the term ahead. This is a long and often demanding term, and it is crucial that our learners return with a strong sense of purpose and engagement in their learning. The habits and effort established now will play a significant role in determining outcomes at the end of the year. We encourage all learners to be present, prepared, and fully involved in their learning from the outset.

A key part of setting ourselves up for success lies in getting the “little things” right. Regular attendance is essential, and we continue to emphasise the importance of being at school every day, on time, and ready to learn. This includes arriving with the correct equipment and wearing the appropriate uniform with pride. These routines build discipline, support a positive learning environment, and ultimately contribute to improved achievement and wellbeing for all learners.

On Tuesday evening, our college was proudly featured on Seven Sharp. It was a fantastic opportunity to showcase our school, our learners, and the values that underpin our community. If you haven’t yet seen the segment, I encourage you to take a moment to view it via the link provided below - it is something we can all be proud of.

We are also excited to announce that tickets are now on sale for our upcoming school production of Footloose. Our learners and staff have been working incredibly hard behind the scenes to bring this production to life, and it promises to be an outstanding showcase of talent, energy, and creativity. I encourage you to support our performers by purchasing tickets through the school website and coming along to enjoy what will be a fantastic event.

As winter sport begins, we wish all of our learners the very best for their respective seasons. Representing the college is a privilege, and we are proud of the commitment and passion our learners bring to their teams. Alongside striving for success, we remind all participants that how they represent our school matters most - demonstrating respect, teamwork, resilience, and sportsmanship at all times.

Thank you, as always, for your ongoing support of our school. We look forward to a productive and successful term ahead.

Japan Trip

By Tui Ladbrook Bannister (Year 12)

Sixteen of us left here on the 11th of April and started our trip to Japan. Two teachers and 14 learners arrived in Osaka and got to spend 2 1/2 days sightseeing, going to Osaka Castle and Universal Studios. We learnt about the history of Japan by going through the Castle and then the fun we all had at Universal Studios. We then moved on to Kyoto and went to the Temples. It was a very spiritual experience. Then came our first homestay, and we were all really scared about meeting our homestay families, but after we got through the first night, it was really amazing. We loved our time at Akatsuki school and the experiences we had both in class and also the opportunities to do sandblasting. We then moved on after some sad farewells to our homestay families and went to Tokyo. We spent a few days shopping and making sure 'our fits' were right before going out. We went to all of Matua's favourite Ramen restaurants. Yum. We then went to our next school and the next homestays. We had another amazing experience, but this time we spent way more time in classes with our buddies. It was really interesting to see how their school works compared to ours. We also got to teach Haka to a lot of classes. We then spent two more days sightseeing and got to go to TeamLabs, which was really cool. The thing that stood out most for us was the number of trains we had to catch and how full they were. We have loved our trip and didn't want to come home, but here we are, and I can only say that if you ever get the opportunity to go to Japan, find a way. It was so amazing!

The Weekly 1% Shift

The Power Down Hour for Sleep

  • Swap the phone for a book or podcast 30 minutes before lights out.
  • The blue light from devices tells the brain it’s daytime, delaying deep sleep. Quality sleep is the number one predictor of focus and emotional regulation in the classroom.
  • Better REM sleep = better memory retention and less brain fog during Period 1.
