Term 1 Issue 2

Tena koutou e te whānau o Whangaparāoa,

Konnichiwa, and hello from Osaka, Japan.  I am currently representing Whangaparāoa College at one of our sister schools, Osaka Kun-ei Johakuin Junior and Senior High School. We were invited to Osaka Kun-ei to be part of their end-of-year graduation and celebrations, much like our end-of-year formalities and prizegivings.

Whangaparāoa College has a strong relationship with many schools across the world as part of our International Student program.  We truly value the relationships we have had over the life of our school, as learners coming from a variety of countries offer so much to us as New Zealanders and encourage diversity and different learnings for all.  In addition to the Japan relationships, last week we hosted International Agents from South America.  It was great to be able to host them and show them our school and our local sights and surroundings.

We are now very well settled into the routines of school life for the year.  Thank you for your ongoing support of ‘phone free gate to gate’ as we all navigate this change.  As our learners continue to start the year positively we also seek support from you to remind our learners of expectations outside the classroom. They should have all received their assessment schedule for the year, and you, as parents, can ask them about this.  Please support our learners as they navigate assessments and learning as they can feel pressure at certain times of the year.  Likewise, all learners should have clear goals for the year.  Once again, ask them about this, and the process in setting the goals.  We all know how important it is to remain focused on the end goal, but sometimes our learners need a small amount of reminding and coercing.

We have recently been able to celebrate academic success at the highest level with our Year 12 and Year 13 academic excellence breakfasts. Special moments like these, shared with parents and whānau, are a memorable part of the school year for all.  Congratulations to our academic scholars.

The next few weeks continue to be busy.  A special welcome to all Year 7 parents this Thursday evening for the ‘Meet the Teacher’ evening starting at 7pm in the Auditorium.. This will be a chance to hear from key staff about the year ahead in detail and meet your learner’s teacher in their classrooms.

For Year 8-13 whānau, there will be an opportunity to meet teachers during Meet the Teacher days on 12 and 13 March.  More information will be provided closer to the time but please note the dates in your calendars.

Finally, sports and arts registrations, trials, and rehearsals are well underway.  Please remind your learner to keep an eye out for all of this information in the Daily Notices.

Te Whare Hauora

On 9 February, Matua Josh led a group of learners through a blessing in Te Whare Hauora, the school’s wellness centre.  This ceremony was held to provide a positive start to the year in the restructured space and for the support services and learners who use it.  It was a lovely moment and meant so much to Te Whare Hauora staff - thank you Matua and learners for coming and supporting the wellness centre and the mahi it does.

EnviroGroup

Over the school holidays, when most of us were lazing at home or on the beach, the school’s 60,000 smallest, most hardworking residents ie the pi (bees) in the 2 school whare miere (beehives), were busy making LOTS of honi (honey). Several learners - Savannah, Maya and Isla - spent around 4 hours collecting and extracting the honi, and in the end, took about 80kg of honi off the hives. It was hot, sweaty and occasionally painful work (with the odd bee sting), but lots of fun, and lots of delicious honi to eat. If your child thinks beekeeping sounds like them, then come along to the EnviroGroup. We meet every Friday lunchtime in S12, and there’s a variety of activities we do around restoring and being kaitiaki of our lovely community, such as trapping and weeding, recycling, gardening, and beekeeping.

Duke of Edinburgh

The Duke of Edinburgh award is a very popular extra-curricular activity offered at the College that involves learners participating in 3 activities in their own time (a community Service, learning a Skill, and doing some sort of Physical Activity), plus 2 overnight tramping, camping or cycling expeditions organised by the school.

There are 3 levels to the award - Bronze, Silver and Gold, and each (or all) are fantastic additions to a CV or school testimonial. Tertiary providers and employers love Dukies! Participants must be 14 or turning 14 to start the award (at Bronze level). Direct entry into Silver or Gold (without having done the lower level awards first) is also possible, provided the participant is 15 (Silver) or 16 (Gold)

If you (or your child) is keen to participate in the award, there will be a whānau information session Wednesday 21 February from 7pm in the school’s Auditorium foyer. It shouldn’t take longer than an hour. If you can’t make it, please feel free to email Mrs Sinclair with any questions at [email protected]

Nathan Wallis presents The Teen Brain

Whangaparāoa Baptist Church
Tuesday, 5 March 2024, 7:30-9:00pm

During adolescence parts of the teenage brain are “shut for renovations”. This is the part of the brain responsible for regulating the teenager’s moods, for understanding consequences, maintaining focus and for thinking about the well-being of others. And the ‘teen’ years can start as early as 9 and end anywhere from 18 to 32 years of age!

However the good news is that there are clear tips and practices from the research that can help and enhance our teen’s ability (and yours) to cope with this tricky time and minimise the stress for everyone. Understanding the changes that are taking place will help you to navigate successfully these important and formative years. Nathan will share strategies to achieve better relationships and better outcomes for the children and teens we work and/or live with!
