Term 1 Issue 3

Tena koutou e te whānau o Whangaparāoa

You may have seen recent media coverage about school attendance rates, also a hot topic during the election campaign.  At Whangaparāoa College, attendance is always a hot topic.  We know that regular school attendance makes a big difference.  Low attendance leads to lower achievement, poorer wellbeing and other issues, including behavioural and social.  Whilst our school attendance is well above national rates we still have over 500 learners with less than 90% already this year and it is not where we want to be.  Our promise to learners and whānau is that we will follow up on poor attendance, lateness and unexplained absences and we are willing to have tough conversations.  Attendance is a partnership between learner, school and home - we ask that whānau support us when those conversations include you and that you support your learners in getting to school on time and ready for learning, particularly if you are the drivers in the morning!  This link has helpful information and tips for parents and caregivers, regarding school attendance.

We are looking forward to seeing the school full of whānau at next week’s Year 8-13 Meet the Teacher sessions, on Tuesday and Wednesday.  These events are extremely important for establishing open lines of communication and fostering a supportive learning environment for learners.  Caregivers can gain insights into the curriculum, teaching methods, and classroom expectations and we believe this knowledge enables you to better support your learner’s educational journey at home.  Booking is easy to do through the SchoolBridge app on your mobile phone, or login through the school website, click on SchoolPoint Conferences and find the times that suit your schedule.  We hope very much that you can make it.

Both our Kapa Haka and Hibiscus Tuakana Pasifika Group (a combined Whangaparāoa and Orewa College group) are hard at work, rehearsing and preparing to take part in Polyfest, the Auckland Secondary Schools Māori and Pacific Islands Cultural Festival.  This now iconic event, which is one of the largest Pacific festivals in the world, is an absolute rite of passage for many of our learners and a highlight of their high school years.  A huge thank you to the team of whānau, supporters and staff who help these learners realise their dream.

Leadership Day at Whangaparāoa School

By: Konstantinos Montes (Year 13)

Over Wednesday the 21st and Thursday the 22nd of February, leaders from Whangaparāoa College, including Sasha Joy, Charlie Teviotdale, and our Head Students, Konstantinos Montes and Emily Stout, visited Whangaparāoa Primary School to talk to the students about leadership. The event consisted of our college students speaking to the year fives and sixes of the primary school, sharing their personal experiences with leadership and encouraging the younger students to pursue leadership opportunities. The younger students got a chance to ask our leaders questions about their experiences and the challenges they faced as leaders. The event concluded with a Waiata and performance from the primary school students to thank our leaders for going to speak to them.

Whangaparaoa College contributes Art Panels to Penlink

At the end of last year a group of Year 10 learners worked on two large mural boards intended for the Penlink construction area.
The theme was Coast and the works reflect the creatures and plants around the Whangaparāoa Peninsula. Amy Harrison, Sophie Bryhn, Tamzin Morgan and Neeve Armstrong worked mainly in their own time to complete the first two murals, and used the work of Sam Mathers, an Auckland based artist as inspiration for their work.
The works were designed by blocking out large areas of the background in different colours. Large koru shaped stencils were then used to reflect both the sea and the pitau design which originates from the shape of the fern frond before it opens.
Once the main areas were blocked in, the learners chose a variety of images and text to complete the works. The overall intention was to create a playful design with easily recognisable images and text that would appeal to people passing by.
The College still has two more mural boards to complete for Penlink and hope to have some Year 8 learners starting on these works next week.

Oceans - Mt Maunganui

Oceans: Festival of Junior Surf Lifesaving was held at Mount Maunganui. Of 750 surf athletes from all over New Zealand, 11 of them were from Whangaparāoa College.

Over four full days of racing - surf swim, board, sprints, relays, and rescues - our Juniors challenged themselves through every weather and surf condition thrown at them. Some made semis and finals, and they all had fun and achieved personal goals!

Congratulations to all who competed.
