Kia ora e te whānau o Whangaparāoa,
Welcome to the start of Term 3. Term 3 is traditionally a very challenging term for our learners, with many assessments and examinations, and the conclusion of winter sports, music, and arts programs. As we all navigate this term, please continue to check in with your learners on how they are doing at school, and the assessments they have completed or are due, and remind them that this season will pass and is for just a short time.
As we have begun the term very positively, there is much inside the newsletter to celebrate. However, I have to take this opportunity to remind our whole community of the importance of attending school all day, every day. If a learner misses class it can be an extreme challenge for them to catch up on work missed, despite having access to much content on Google Classroom. As a parent, you can monitor your learner's attendance directly on the School App and portal and I encourage you to take a few minutes to check these. I will be reminding all our learners at this week's whole school assembly of the importance of attending school and would appreciate your support.
My family has been heavily engrossed in the watching and supporting of the Olympic Games. Over the weekend we followed the swimming events closely and our boys were in awe of our New Zealand athletes. At Whangaparāoa College we have had amazing results in the pool at the New Zealand Secondary School Swimming Champs, finishing 4th in New Zealand. This is a remarkable result, with a small but extremely competitive team. Congratulations.
This week we have our Music Fest. We have over 150 learners taking the Auditorium stage, it is a fantastic night to see all our musicians show their work. The evening culminates in our top musicians completing their final public performance before the KBB Musical Festival. If you have the time, I encourage you to attend the Music Fest on Thursday evening.
We have welcomed 41 International learners from throughout the world to our school this term, alongside a short-term group of Japanese learners from Senshu Matsudo school in Japan. Welcome to you all. Our International Student program is extremely positive for our regular students and brings significant diversity to our school and community. We can't do this without our wonderful homestay families, so a huge thank you to our host families. If you are interested in being part of our International program, please contact us.
Our 2025 enrolments are open. If you know of members of our community who have learners in Year 6, please remind them to complete their online enrolment via our website and book an interview time.
Ngā mihi

This decision was made to enhance comfort, inclusivity, practicality, and overall satisfaction with our school uniform as well as making the uniform as cost effective as possible for whānau.

AttendanceThe government target is for 80 percent of learners to have attendance of 90% and higher.
Currently at Whangaparāoa College - 38% of learners have attendance below 90%
- 24% of learners are late to class
- Friday is the least attended day
- 445 learners have attendance between 80-90%. At 80% learners are missing one whole day of school per week!
- 123 learners have attendance between 70-80%
- 130 learners have chronic absence (below 70%)
To meet the target, Whangaparāoa College needs to improve the attendance of 324 learners. However, we want to do better than that, and support the vast majority of our learners to have attendance of 90% and higher. To achieve this target we require support from parents/ caregivers - Check their childs attendance on the portal regularly
- Notify absences - [email protected]
- If you child is unwell please provide a reason. We will ask for medical certificates if unwellness is impacting attendance below 90%
- Ensure your child is awake and ready for school on time
- Liaise with the school if your child has concerns related to learning, options, social, health, mental health/ anxiety
