Term 3 Issue 2

Kia ora e te whanau o Whangaparāoa

It was fantastic to see so many whanau supporting our learners at last week's options information evening. We trust you found the evening informative and useful. This part of the process is crucial to the planning for next year and we appreciate the process being completed as soon as possible. We already have over 900 selections made, so appreciate the remainder making this a priority this coming weekend.

As always, life at our school is action-packed with events and activities for our learners, both inside and outside the classroom. We are lucky to have such great staff and community support to offer what we do - thank you to all those involved with supporting our learners in additional activities.

This week is Maths Week, and the Maths faculty have arranged a number of additional activities to continue to inspire and engage all learners. With the national drive to enhance the achievement in mathematics, we are lucky to have staff who are committed to go above and beyond.

We have also had learners involved in the New Zealand Engineering Science Competition. They face the challenge of solving the problem of “How many airships would be required to replace the Cook Strait ferries?” Quite a relevant topic at the moment, and we look forward to hearing the results in September.

On Tuesday evening our Concert Band performed at the KBB Music Festival at the Holy Trinity Cathedral. We performed exceptionally well and we are all so proud of the performance. Congratulations to you all.

Next Wednesday we have our third attempt at our Whole School House Event Day. The purpose of this day is to engage our learners and staff in the House system and begin to grow this as a mechanism to connect our learners more strongly with our school. While there are House points on offer, the opportunity for all learners to be involved in some way is exciting. Whanau are more than welcome to come along and support your learners in their range of events on the day.

There is also a lot of excitement around the school as we near the conclusion of the winter sports season. Once again, thank you to all involved for helping us make this happen for our learners and community. There have been many successes and as we approach the semi-finals and finals, we wish you all the best. Please remember learners, play hard, play fair, and represent yourself, whanau and our school to the best of your ability.

Thank you to those who have taken the time to share your thoughts directly with us regarding the school uniform announcement.  We value and appreciate community feedback and will continue to work with our community as we transition into the refreshed uniform.

NZ Engineering Science competition

On Saturday 9.30am to 6pm, 20 Calculus and Physics learners from L1, 2 & 3 came to school to participate in The annual New Zealand Engineering Science competition.
The competition is a problem-solving event for teams of senior secondary students organised by the University of Auckland's Department of Engineering Science and Biomedical Engineering.

The 2024 question from the University was:

  • How many airships would be required to replace the Cook Straits ferries?

Each team of 4 researched and used mathematical modelling to write a report for the open ended question. At the end of the day, everyone was exhausted but came away with a huge sense of achievement. The buzz through the day proved the fun they were having working on the question. Results will be out early Term 4.

Three ex-learners currently at UoA in their 4th year of Engineering, Kian, Jackson and Kenny also came over and spent a few hours on Saturday. They gave the learners good tips on how to prepare and go about Engineering at the University during their lunch break!
