This stunning mural is painted by local artist Chris Dews who has been an artist in residence at Whangaparāoa College for its creation. This experience allowed learners to see the full process of the artwork as it emerged, from the preliminary drawings to reworked areas. Learners were also able to ask endless questions whilst Chris worked, which he patiently answered. Many thanks to Kathie Boyd and Camilla Copley for organising this fantastic opportunity as well as Allan Moran who donated the plywood. A bit about the artwork is below.
The mural is called, "Kāinga" or Home. A place that will always remain upon departure. As the Kōtuku takes flight, new opportunities are offered toward Long Bay and the city, the route offers multiple detours and shortcuts creating opportunities for lessons to be learned. The contrast between traditional schooners and the city's skyscrapers suggests a timeless present, representing Kāinga as an infinite place that can always be found from any perspective.
